I hate living alone, talking to myself is boring conversation.
Me and I are not friends, she is only an acquaintance.

Daughter’s second full-length LP, Not To Disappear (album may contain explicit content), is an early 2016 release I have been anticipating for much of the second half of 2015. Daughter’s first record, If You Leave, was a terrific debut. It was both simple and dynamic, diverse and whole. Yet, despite its beauty, I felt as there was still room to improve for Daughter. I would classify Daughter’s past work as Ambient, Alternative Rock. Not To Disappear builds upon Daughter’s ambient style, as the trio tries to create space for the depth of vocalist Elena Tonra’s lyrics. Anyone who has experience any sort of heart break, feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, hopelessness, or even nothing at all will find much of this album relatable lyrically. Instrumentally, Daughter creates space through their ambient style for the listener to get lost in emotion. Nearly every song has one point or another where it breaks off into an instrumental for the listener to either think and be reminded of and reflect upon memories, or to simply try and forget all together their past hurts and pain.
An album meant to be this intimate, this personal, most of the time has a gradual affect on me. I cannot listen to this record once and expect to have received from it all it has to offer. I need to continue to go back to this record time and time again until I have given it enough opportunity to reach my heart and feelings; however, this record does lack the initial draw that I had hoped it would. In times where the sadness could be dynamic and captivating, it tended to be just slow and well, sad. Overall, I believe Daughter has released an album many could find beneficially therapeutic and relatable. Although the entirety of the album is one of pain, apathy, and loneliness, Daughter ends the album with a glimpse hope in the track Made of Stone, singing, I think I’m made of stone. I think we are all built out of memories, built out of seams. Structures of whispers pass through our veins, laid out on screens, shower tiny heads. You’ll find love, kid, it exists. Regardless of the emptiness you currently feel or the heartbreak you have endured, Daughter reminds us all there is love out there. It exists, and desires to fill you.
