I am growing less fond of singer-songwriters. I never liked country. And yet this is a mix of the two. Although I never heard of her until this past week, The Bird and the Rifle is Lori McKenna’s tenth LP. Her voice is smooth and charming while her lyrics create vivid visuals through her story-telling ability. I do find McKenna a bit basic at times, but I would attribute part of that to my personal preferences and she remains unendingly endearing despite any lulls. It was tempting to overlook both McKenna and the record, but instead I am trying to grab what I like about it see if I find more attractive aspects along the way.
