I store my thoughts in other people’s heads
Then I question what they know
Blanco was my favorite record of 2016. It was the first record by David Bazan I ever listened to and one that took a long time to sink in and for me to love. But to date, it is one of my favorite records of all time. So when I heard that less than a year later, Bazan was coming out with another record, I was both enthralled and tentative, understanding the difficulty of topping Blanco.
Care feels like a collection of B-side from Blanco. Bazan released two songs a month for a year in a project called Bazan Monthly and I am assuming that some of the ones that did not make the cut for Blanco are the songs on Care. The producton is different as well. Bazan’s voice is given much more focus on Care. And the synths I believe are not as crisply produced either. The instrumentation also feels more hollow and less layered which creates an emptiness within some of the songs.
Yet despite my reservations with the new record, Care still features some amazing songs and Bazan is an unbelievable artist. The record will still most likely make the back half of my Top 10 because the dude is just that good. Listen to the last three tracks on the record to see what I mean.
I believe this project is to keep listeners connected and engaged in preparation for Bazan’s full length documentary Strange Negotiations. Here is the kickstarter if anyone would like to support the cause. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/864557968/strange-negotiations-the-david-bazan-documentary?ref=category_featured.
I do not agree with some of the answers Bazan gives to the questions he asks. But I am also aware that he is asking questions I am not, but should be. And that is why I will always welcome artists who push me into the discography of what I listen to—because we need people asking questions we are not so we stop making assumptions we should not and become less naive of those around us.
